Australian Tennis Player Destanee Aiava Announces Retirement, Critiques Sport’s Culture
Destanee Aiava, a professional tennis player from Australia, declared plans to retire from the sport at the end of 2026. The 25-year-old issued a blunt statement on social media addressing long-standing issues she has faced within tennis culture. Aiava described the environment as “racist, misogynistic, homophobic and hostile” toward those who do not conform to certain norms.
In a lengthy and candid post on Instagram, Aiava called tennis her “toxic boyfriend,” questioning whether continuing her career was worth the personal sacrifices she endured. She expressed a desire to live a life aligned with her true self rather than one marked by constant comparison and hardship. “Life is not meant to be lived in misery and half assed,” she wrote. She added that her goal was to wake up each day loving what she does, something she believes everyone deserves.
Aiava did not hold back in addressing critics and online trolls who targeted her over her performance, appearance, and distinctive bright outfits. She directed strong language at members of the tennis community who made her feel diminished and condemned those who sent hateful messages. She described the sport as hiding behind traditions and “so-called class and gentlemanly values” while maintaining a toxic internal culture.
Aiava’s journey in tennis began as a child inspired by Serena Williams at the Australian Open. She quickly rose as a junior prodigy, reaching a career-high singles ranking of 147 in 2017. Despite this early promise, consistency at the top level eluded her, and she currently ranks 321 in the world. Her recent appearances include reaching the second round of the Australian Open in 2025 but failing to qualify for the singles draw in 2026. She last competed in January 2026 in doubles with partner Maddison Inglis.
Reflecting on her career, Aiava shared that she often questioned whether her sacrifices for tennis were worth the cost. She recalled a pivotal moment at age 17 when she was close to a breakthrough but faced setbacks after trusting the wrong people, which changed her career trajectory. Although she is stepping away from professional tennis, Aiava indicated she remains open to the possibilities in the next chapter of her life, which she hopes will be driven by purpose, creativity, and passion.
Aiava’s announcement has sparked conversations about the challenges and pressures faced by professional athletes, especially those who feel marginalized within their sporting communities. Her willingness to speak openly about the negative aspects of tennis culture sheds light on issues often left unspoken in the sport.
