Celebrating a Legacy: Shippensburg Swim Coach Tim Verge Retires After 27 Impactful Seasons

Tim Verge Steps Down After 27 Seasons Leading Shippensburg Swimming

Shippensburg University announced that Tim Verge, head coach of its men’s and women’s swim teams, will retire effective June 30, ending a 27-year tenure as the program’s leader.

Verge, a 1989 graduate of Shippensburg, first took over as head coach in the 1998-99 season. Except for a brief period in 2009-10 when he served as acting assistant director of athletics, Verge guided the swim teams continuously since then.

“I’ve been very blessed over the years as a coach to experience some euphoric moments with some wonderful student-athletes,” Verge said. He spoke with pride about his teams’ dedication to academics as well. “I’ve never missed a graduation in all my years.”

Verge described his coaching experience as evolving. “I think I’ve enjoyed my teams lately more than I did years ago; I’ve probably gotten softer,” he observed. “But it’s just time. I think I’ve just run out of gas to give it my everything every day which the team deserves.”

Under Verge’s leadership, Shippensburg swimming rose to prominence in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). The women’s teams placed in the conference top five fifteen times, including four top-three finishes. The men’s teams placed in the top four nine times, achieving five top-three finishes.

On the national stage, Verge coached several NCAA Division II standouts. Seven women swimmers earned All-America First Team honors, including Erin Goodhart, a 17-time honoree who graduated in 2004. During a period from 2009 to 2012, the women’s team produced more than 25 NCAA qualifiers and seven relays earned All-America honorable mentions. More recently, Gabriella Johnson earned All-American status in 2020, and Stephanie O’Toole took fourth in the 200-yard IM in 2018. Among men, Mike Owen and John Hughes also received NCAA recognition.

Verge credited his family and colleagues for their support. He thanked his wife, Staci, for standing by him through the years and his parents for inspiring his swimming career. He also praised the athletic staff at Shippensburg, including Jeff Michaels, Carrie Michaels, Ashley Grimm, and support teams in training, sports information, equipment, strength and conditioning, and academics. “They definitely make our jobs as coaches a lot easier,” he said.

Beyond competitive results, Verge’s teams excelled academically. They earned College Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America Team honors every year during his tenure and secured Top Team GPA awards multiple times among Shippensburg sports.

Verge’s collegiate coaching career spans 36 years. Before Shippensburg, he served as an assistant coach at Edinboro University for three years starting in 1989, Northern Arizona University for two years, and Arizona State University for one year. His first head coaching position was at another institution before he returned to his alma mater.

As Verge steps away this summer, Shippensburg swimming prepares to build on a legacy of competitive and academic success shaped by his leadership.
