West Virginia University Issues Reminder for International Travel Registration
West Virginia University (WVU) has reminded all faculty and staff who plan to travel internationally for university-related activities to register their travel ahead of time. This requirement also applies when taking university-owned or personal equipment associated with university programs, such as email access, abroad—even if the travel is personal.
The registration process requires employees to provide details needed to comply with U.S. Export Regulations. Gathering this information helps ensure travelers meet Federal Export Control rules. By completing the registration before departure, employees also secure coverage through International SOS for health and evacuation insurance.
WVU recommends completing the registration at least six weeks before the planned travel date. Faculty traveling with students must ensure student travel follows the Education Abroad program protocols. Those who have not completed the Education Abroad process should contact Vanessa Yerkovich for assistance. All student travel with faculty, whether for credit or non-credit purposes, must go through Education Abroad.
The university also reminds staff to register any visits by foreign visitors through the Office of Global Affairs’ International Visitor Registry before inviting or accepting guests. Once registered, the Export Control Office (ECO) reviews the visit to check whether the visitor appears on federal restricted party lists or is linked to restricted entities. They also assess additional export control requirements based on each visit’s nature and scope.
If further information is needed, the ECO will contact the host and provide necessary export control guidance.
For questions about international travel registration and related procedures, WVU staff can reach out to Tara George-Jones, International Risk Manager at the Office of Global Affairs, via email at Tara.George-Jones@mail.wvu.edu.
This reminder aims to maintain compliance with federal regulations and ensure the safety and preparedness of all university travelers.
