Travel Agents Respond to U.S. International Travel Advisory Amid Global Concerns

Birmingham, Ala. — The U.S. State Department issued an advisory urging Americans to exercise caution when traveling abroad. This advisory came into effect on February 28, coinciding with the launch of U.S. Operation Epic Fury in Iran.

The latest travel advisory map highlights several regions, including parts of Central and South America, countries in Africa and the Middle East, as well as Russia and Ukraine. These areas carry a level 4 “Do not travel” warning. This classification serves to protect American citizens by advising against travel to locations with heightened risks.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed the situation in a recent video message. He reassured Americans currently in the Middle East about the government’s efforts to safeguard their well-being. He mentioned the establishment of a 24/7 task force dedicated to managing the situation. Secretary Rubio also encouraged travelers to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This program enables the U.S. Embassy to contact Americans quickly during emergencies.

Travel agents are observing mixed reactions from clients following the advisory. Cherelle Newsome, a travel agent, noted that many clients show a strong desire to travel internationally but remain hesitant due to concerns about potential travel disruptions or the uncertain global climate. She emphasized the importance of staying informed about travel warnings and maintaining flexibility by having backup plans for accommodations and flights.

Newsome said, “I advise travelers to always have a plan B. Having another hotel or flight option helps travelers stay safe and reduces anxiety. Staying smart and prepared allows people to travel without unnecessary fear.”

In response to the advisory and the evolving travel environment, the Alabama Travel Agents Association released a statement to guide travelers through the challenges ahead. The association recommends the following steps before international travel:

  • Register for the STEP program to ensure the local embassy knows their location.

  • Review travel advisories by destination, available on the State Department’s website.

  • Apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) when passing through the United Kingdom, even if just connecting.

  • Download airline mobile apps to get the latest flight information and complete pre-flight check-ins, including uploading passport photos.

  • Share copies of passport photo pages and itineraries with a trusted friend or family member.

  • Arrive at the airport at least 3.5 hours before departure.

  • Allow 2 to 4 hours for layovers, depending on the connection.

  • Consider purchasing a “Cancel for Any Reason” travel protection plan to cover unexpected cancellations or delays.

The statement also reminds travelers to show patience and kindness toward airport staff and fellow travelers during these unusual times.

The advisory comes amid a spring break season in full swing and summer travel planning underway. The travel industry encourages careful preparation to ensure safe and smooth trips during this period.

Travel agents urge travelers to stay informed, prepare thoroughly, and use professional travel advisors to navigate current international travel complexities safely.
