Travel Agents Respond to U.S. International Travel Advisory Amid Rising Concerns
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory urging Americans to exercise caution when traveling internationally following the launch of Operation ‘Epic Fury’ in Iran on February 28. The advisory highlighted elevated risks in parts of Central and South America, Africa, the Middle East, as well as Russia and Ukraine, assigning these regions a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” warning to protect U.S. citizens abroad.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed the advisory directly in a video message. He assured Americans in the Middle East that a 24/7 task force is actively monitoring the situation to ensure their safety. Rubio also encouraged travelers to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). The program helps the U.S. Embassy locate and contact Americans if an emergency occurs during their trip.
Travel agents in Alabama reported mixed reactions from clients. Cherelle Newsome, a local travel advisor, said many people feel anxious about international travel due to fears of being stranded or concerns about global stability. “I have a lot of nervous travelers right now. I try to assure them that as long as they plan carefully, things will be okay,” Newsome explained. She recommended that travelers have backup plans for accommodation and flights and stay informed about travel warnings.
The Alabama Travel Agents Association issued a practical checklist for travelers preparing for international trips. The list includes:
- Register with the STEP program to keep embassies informed of your location.
- Check current travel advisories on the State Department website.
- Apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) if passing through the UK, even for airport connections.
- Use airline mobile apps to check flight updates, pre-check in, and save time at the airport.
- Leave copies of your passport and itinerary with a trusted person.
- Arrive at the airport at least 3.5 hours before departure.
- Allow 2-4 hours for connecting flights.
- Consider purchasing a “Cancel for Any Reason” travel insurance plan.
- Show patience and kindness to fellow travelers and airline staff managing new travel challenges.
- Work with a professional travel advisor for guidance.
The advisory comes as many Americans plan spring break and summer vacations abroad amid ongoing international uncertainties. Travel experts emphasize that careful preparation and awareness can help travelers stay safe while navigating complex global conditions.
