Trump’s Chief of Staff Restricts Cabinet Members’ International Travel
Washington, D.C. — Susie Wiles, the Chief of Staff to President Donald Trump, has imposed new limits on international travel for Cabinet members. According to multiple sources speaking to Politico, Cabinet officials now require approval from the White House, specifically from Wiles, before planning any trips abroad.
The policy was introduced recently and aims to keep the administration focused on domestic matters ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Staff members were reportedly advised in February to avoid international travel unless it is absolutely necessary.
In the early part of Trump’s second term, Cabinet members frequently traveled overseas. However, with the midterms approaching, the administration appears to prioritize concentrating efforts within the United States. One source told Politico that all travel requests go through Cabinet Affairs, and international trips are reviewed individually with a strong preference for domestic travel.
The policy has generated some pushback from federal agencies. A U.S. Department of Agriculture spokesperson emphasized the importance of foreign travel in fulfilling the agency’s work. The spokesperson highlighted that Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs Luke Lindberg have traveled extensively to negotiate trade deals and reduce barriers in key markets, efforts that have helped American farmers and ranchers gain better market access worldwide.
Sources suggest the new travel restrictions are not a reaction to specific instances of excessive travel, but part of a wider strategy to maintain focus on internal issues, especially considering Trump and Republicans anticipate a challenging midterm election. The administration also faces ongoing concerns with international tensions, such as the situation with Iran, as well as domestic economic pressures like high gas prices.
This move reflects a shift toward consolidating attention on internal affairs as the party braces for what some in the administration foresee as a difficult political year.
