Viktor Axelsen Retires, Receives Honors from Across the Sporting World
Viktor Axelsen, the Danish badminton star, has announced his retirement at age 32. The two-time Olympic champion and world titleholder ended his professional career after years of success that helped Denmark rise among the top nations in badminton.
Axelsen confirmed his retirement on social media. Since then, athletes and sports figures from various disciplines have shown their respect and admiration for him. Carolina Marín of Spain, herself an Olympic badminton gold medalist who recently retired, wrote, “Happy retirement my friend!! We should enjoy the new chapter of life. Hope to see you soon around the world!”
Kunlavut Vitidsarn, the Thai player who took the silver medal after facing Axelsen in the Paris 2024 men’s singles final, thanked him: “Thank you for every battle we shared. You pushed me to be better every single time. Wishing you all the best in your next chapter.”
Axelsen has competed in three Olympic Games. He won bronze at Rio 2016, then gold in men’s singles at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024. He holds the joint-second highest number of Olympic badminton medals since the sport debuted at the Barcelona 1992 Games.
Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew, 2021 world champion and Axelsen’s good friend and rival, said, “More than just a rival, you’ve been a true friend and an inspiration to so many of us. The sport won’t be the same without you competing, but your legacy will stay with all of us.”
Indian Youth Olympic medalist Lakshya Sen praised Axelsen: “Badminton is blessed to have you. It will remember you as one of the greatest to ever play the game, but what truly sets you apart isn’t just the champion you are, it’s the person you are, that stays far beyond matches and medals.”
Other fellow Olympians offered their best wishes. Jonatan Christie said, “Happy retirement, Champ! It was an honor to share the field with you.” Anthony Sinikusa Ginting added, “Happy retirement buddy! Congrats for an amazing career! Wishing you all the best for your next chapter of life!”
Many Danish sports stars also expressed their admiration. Footballer Christian Eriksen posted a series of emojis showing love and respect. Brazilian table tennis Olympian Hugo Calderano simply used two goat emojis to salute him.
Handball players Mathias Gidsel and Rasmus Lauge Schmidt praised Axelsen’s athleticism and humility. Gidsel said, “Saw you live at the Paris Olympics – and wow! Never have I seen such a complete athlete in real life. At the same time, you are so down to earth and real – a huge inspiration to the rest of us.” Wrestler Turpal Ali Bisultanov added, “Happy retirement Viggo! Such a great athlete and even better human being. Hope to see you soon.”
Denmark’s top tennis player Clara Tauson congratulated him with a simple message: “Congratulations on the most amazing career Viktor! Legend forever.”
Axelsen’s impact on badminton and Danish sport remains strong. His career highlights and sportsmanship have left a lasting mark. Though his professional days are over, the sport and his country will remember him as one of the greats.
