Brandon Graham Returns to Eagles for 16th Season
Brandon Graham, the Philadelphia Eagles’ longtime defensive end, has decided to come out of retirement and will play his 16th NFL season with the team. The Eagles announced the signing on Tuesday morning. Graham’s return adds leadership, experience, and depth to an already strong Eagles defense. The team currently stands 5-2 and leads the NFC East.
Graham retired after winning his second Super Bowl with the Eagles. At a press conference then, he expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him since he was drafted in 2010. Despite retiring, Graham stayed in shape and maintained readiness to return, especially after dominating early in the previous season before a torn triceps injury sidelined him. He even played well in Super Bowl LIX after recovering from the injury.
The Eagles explored the idea of Graham returning before the 2025 season as they looked to build depth at the edge position. Initially, Graham was hesitant to come back. The Eagles signed veteran Za’Darius Smith, who contributed well but unexpectedly retired last week. This development led to renewed discussions with Graham, and he agreed to return.
Graham joins a defensive line rotation that includes Nolan Smith, currently on injured reserve, along with Jalyx Hunt, Joshua Uche, Azeez Ojulari, and Patrick Johnson. Graham will bring veteran leadership, versatility to play multiple positions on the line, and enthusiasm to the squad.
Known as an all-time franchise legend, Graham holds several Eagles records. He is the team’s all-time leader in games played with 206, ranks third in sacks with 76.5, and leads the franchise in postseason sacks with 5.5. He earned Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors during his career and served as a team captain. His teammates regard him highly; rookie Jalyx Hunt expressed excitement about learning from him.
In the 11 games Graham played last season, he recorded 3.5 sacks and six tackles for loss. His final game before initially retiring featured a strong performance with a sack, two tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, and a pass defended. Linebacker Nakobe Dean said that Graham’s energy and presence in the locker room make a real impact regardless of how much he plays.
With Graham back on the roster, the Eagles hope to add not only talent but also the veteran presence necessary to strengthen the defense as they push through the remainder of the 2025 season.
