Charles Leno Jr., former NFL offensive lineman, announced his retirement on Tuesday. The timing of his announcement held personal meaning. It came exactly two years after his wife, Jen, suffered a miscarriage of their fourth daughter, Paitynn, at 2:46 p.m. Leno was at an Atlanta game, where the Washington Commanders played the Falcons, when he received the news. He did not take part in the game.
In an Instagram post, Leno said that day changed everything for him. He explained it changed how he views life, how he carries himself, and, most importantly, what matters most to him.
Leno was drafted in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. He spent seven seasons with the Bears before they traded him to Washington. The Commanders released him during the 2024 offseason, and he did not play last season.
Throughout his career, Leno started 141 games at left tackle and appeared in 149 games overall. He earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2018. At age 34, Leno concluded a decade-long NFL career marked by steady play and professionalism. Retirement allows him to focus on life beyond football after a journey filled with personal trials and achievements.
