Facing Criticism, Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart Bows Out of Controversial $1M Retirement Role

Kentucky Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart will forgo a $1 million retirement position amid widespread criticism and controversy. Barnhart announced on Thursday that he would step away from the executive in residence role for the University of Kentucky Sports and Workforce Initiative, a position intended to follow his retirement as athletic director on June 30. Earlier this year, Kentucky University President Eli Capilouto revealed that Barnhart planned to retire from his long-held role as athletic director. The retirement package included the new high-paying assignment with few specific duties outlined in the contract. This arrangement drew strong opposition from Kentucky boosters and public figures, who questioned the necessity and transparency of the position.

Capilouto stated that Barnhart approached him this week to express concern that the ongoing discussion about his future role had become a distraction from the university’s mission. “Mitch and his family care deeply about this institution and our state, and they want the focus to return to the work that matters most for our students and the Commonwealth,” Capilouto said.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear added to the critical voices earlier this week by criticizing the university’s decision-making process and expressing doubts about the creation of a new $1 million role without clear responsibilities. “I am losing confidence and growing increasingly concerned with the management and decision-making at the University of Kentucky,” Beshear said in an official statement.

Barnhart’s tenure as athletic director featured both successes and challenges. He is credited with hiring football coach Mark Stoops and basketball coach John Calipari, who led the basketball team to a national title in 2012 and helped produce multiple winning football seasons. However, Barnhart’s relationship with Calipari deteriorated, leading to the coach’s departure in 2024. Stoops was fired in December 2025, and Barnhart promoted Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein as his replacement.

Basketball coach Mark Pope, also hired by Barnhart, ended the last season with a disappointing record and early NCAA tournament exit. Pope has struggled to secure top recruits and key transfers, contributing to speculation about the program’s future under his leadership.

Barnhart’s leadership also came under scrutiny in connection with a 2024 Title IX lawsuit. Former swim coach Lars Jorgensen faced multiple accusations of sexual assault, with claims that the university failed to adequately address the allegations. Jorgensen resigned in 2024 and has been banned from coaching by the U.S. Center for SafeSport.

In a statement, Barnhart said the family was excited about launching the Sports Workforce Initiative before the backlash. He acknowledged that the timing was not right to continue with the project and expressed hope that it would proceed in the future. “The world of sports is dynamic and ever-changing. It is my hope that this initiative will continue in the future,” Barnhart said.

Details concerning the terms and process of Barnhart’s departure will be worked out in the coming weeks under the guidance of his existing contract. The University of Kentucky and its supporters now face the challenge of moving forward from the controversy and focusing on the institution’s athletic and academic goals.
