Kevin Elliott and his wife Camille made a choice that many retirees might consider but few pursue. After spending eight years living and working abroad, they decided not to return to the United States for retirement. Instead, they settled in Hua Hin, a coastal town in Thailand, where they enjoy a comfortable and peaceful life.
From Qatar to Thailand
The couple originally moved from South Carolina to Doha, Qatar, in 2018, when Kevin accepted a job there. Life in the Middle East presented new challenges, such as adapting to the intense heat and overcoming language barriers when dealing with local bureaucracy. Nevertheless, they established a social circle and traveled extensively during their time in Qatar.
When Kevin’s job contract ended, returning to the US was not their preferred option. Increasing political divisions and a high cost of living in America influenced their decision. They considered several countries suitable for retirement, including Malaysia, Costa Rica, and Panama, but Thailand stood out due to its affordability and accessible retirement visa policies.
Choosing Hua Hin
In late 2025, the Elliotts visited Hua Hin, about 90 miles southwest of Bangkok, to explore their retirement options. They had less than a month to make a decision before their visas in Qatar expired. Despite this tight timeframe, they secured a lease on a three-bedroom home in a gated community. The monthly rent is about $870, which is far less than what they paid for a one-bedroom apartment in Doha.
Their new home features a yard and plenty of greenery that reminds Camille of her childhood in Jamaica. The couple enjoys their surroundings, though some unusual neighborhood visitors, like monkeys, occasionally wander into their yard. They find these moments amusing and part of the charm of living in a different country.
Affordable Living and Quality of Life
The Elliotts aim to keep their monthly expenses under $2,500. They are still adjusting to their new budget, as the initial phase included purchasing household items. While most costs in Thailand remain lower than in the US, they stress the importance of budgeting carefully to avoid overspending.
Kevin estimates that their Social Security benefits will bring in about $4,000 a month, providing a stable income for their retirement. They appreciate how much they can eat well on a modest budget, enjoying fresh seafood, vegetables, and fruit, which would be more expensive in the United States.
They also find the healthcare system in Thailand reliable, and they feel safer compared to their concerns about gun violence in the US.
Adjusting to a New Culture and Routine
The Elliotts continue to get used to their new environment. The heat and humidity of Thailand require patience, especially after living in air-conditioned Doha. Language remains a hurdle. While they use apps like Google Translate, they know it’s not a permanent solution for effective communication.
The slower pace of life occasionally tests their patience compared to the efficient systems in Qatar and the US, but they appreciate the warm and friendly culture they have encountered in Thailand. Kevin says he follows two important principles: to respect and engage with the local culture while also treating life as an adventure.
The couple has adopted two more dogs since moving in, adding to their four-pet family. They plan to become more socially active and hope to join local golf groups—Kevin enjoys the game but hasn’t played much in recent years.
A Growing Community of Retirees
Exact data on how many Americans retire in Thailand is hard to pin down, but nearly 7,200 retirees there received Social Security benefits in late 2024. This suggests that Thailand remains an attractive destination for US retirees seeking lower living costs and a welcoming expatriate community.
