American Couple Retires in Thailand After Years Abroad
Kevin Elliott and his wife, Camille, spent nearly eight years living in Doha, Qatar, following Kevin’s job move from South Carolina in 2018. When Kevin’s contract ended, they faced a choice about where to retire. Instead of returning to the US, they chose to settle in Hua Hin, a coastal town in Thailand, known for its affordable living and welcoming expat community.
Life Abroad and Retirement Decision
Adjusting to life in Qatar took time for the couple, especially dealing with the intense heat and language barriers when handling official matters. Over the years, they built a social network and traveled widely in the region. Despite this, staying long-term in Doha was never their plan. Returning to the US did not appeal due to political tensions and high costs.
Their travels included visits to Malaysia, Thailand, Costa Rica, and Panama as potential retirement spots. They aimed to find a place where their Social Security income could support them comfortably. Thailand emerged as the top choice because of lower living expenses and the availability of retirement visas.
Settling in Hua Hin
After checking out Hua Hin in November and under time pressure before their Qatar visas expired, they quickly signed a lease. They relocated there on January 1. Their new three-bedroom house in a gated community rents for about $870 per month, a major upgrade compared to their previous one-bedroom apartment in Doha which cost around $2,100. Camille finds the greenery and yard space reminiscent of her childhood home in Jamaica. The couple shares their home with four dogs, including two they brought from Qatar and two they recently adopted locally. They have encountered local wildlife, like monkeys visiting their yard, which they find entertaining.
Cost of Living and Lifestyle
Their goal is to keep monthly expenses under $2,500, although they are still learning about local costs. While many things are cheaper than in the US, spending can add up if they do not stay mindful. They have started to rely less on ride-hailing apps for transportation and groceries and plan to buy a car soon.
Food costs are lower, allowing them to enjoy fresh seafood, vegetables, and fruit regularly. They appreciate the local health care system’s quality and say they feel safe in Thailand, contrasting this with concerns about gun violence in the US.
Adjusting to the New Environment
The couple notes that adapting to Thailand’s heat and humidity differs from the more air-conditioned environment they had in Qatar. Language remains a challenge, even with translation apps. They miss some of the efficiency and speed of services back in Doha and the US but have grown comfortable with the slower pace and cultural differences.
Kevin hopes to engage with local golf groups, as golf is popular in the area. Social connections feel more genuine, with easier opportunities to stay in touch with fellow expats.
Living by Two Rules
Kevin follows two key pieces of advice: respect and integrate into the local culture without losing one’s own identity, and approach life as an adventure. The couple views their retirement in Thailand as a new chapter, offering a quality of life they believe would be hard to find back in America.
As the number of US retirees in Thailand grows, many are drawn by similar factors: affordable living, good healthcare, and a welcoming community. The Elliotts’ story highlights the possibilities for retirees willing to embrace change and find their place abroad.
