Mohan Bhagwat Shares Views on Indian Policies at RSS Centennial Event
New Delhi, August 28, 2025 — During a press conference on Thursday, Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), responded to media queries as part of a three-day lecture series titled ‘100 Years of the Sangh’s Journey – New Horizons’. His address covered several key issues affecting India today.
On retirement age, Bhagwat clarified that he had not advocated for a fixed retirement age for Indian leaders. He explained that in the RSS, individuals serve as long as the organization requires. “If I am 80 years old and the Sangh asks me to run a ‘shakha’, I must do it. We fulfill the duties assigned to us regardless of age,” he said.
Regarding international trade, specifically the tariffs imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, Bhagwat remarked that the Indian government understands how to handle such matters and has their support. He emphasized the need for India to build entrepreneurship and become self-reliant.
On population control, Bhagwat referenced doctors’ views suggesting India should consider a three-child policy. He noted the ideal birth rate is around 2.1, but since partial children are impossible, families might need to have three children on average.
Addressing cooperation with government bodies, Bhagwat acknowledged ongoing coordination between RSS and both state and central governments. He pointed out that existing systems, originally designed during British rule, sometimes create internal contradictions. He called for innovative approaches while respecting the independence of officials to implement changes.
On the subject of reservations, Bhagwat voiced full support for constitutionally mandated affirmative action policies. He noted that although Sangh workers previously held varied opinions on the issue, the RSS now stands firmly behind reservations as long as they remain necessary. He condemned caste-related violence and called for justice.
Bhagwat spoke on religious conversion and illegal immigration as well. He asserted that religion must remain a personal choice and that forced conversions should be stopped. He also stressed the importance of curbing illegal infiltration to protect the country’s resources and ensure employment for Indian citizens.
Regarding language, Bhagwat said learning English is acceptable but should not come at the cost of abandoning native languages and culture. He advocated for all Indians to be fluent in their mother tongue, their state language, and a common transactional language that is not foreign.
On demographic changes, Bhagwat attributed some imbalance to illegal migration and conversions. He stated that jobs should be reserved for Indian citizens, including Muslims, and that preventing illegal immigration aligns with national discipline without contradicting the idea of global unity.
When asked about RSS’s support for political parties, Bhagwat clarified that the organization offers help when requested for beneficial work. He said volunteers sometimes assist parties but noted that the RSS does not impose help where it is unwelcome.
Finally, Bhagwat addressed the topic of Hindu-Muslim unity by stating that all Indians are fundamentally the same regardless of religious practices. He expressed that the concept of Akhand Bharat (undivided India) reflects the shared culture and ancestry of the nation’s people.
The lecture series commemorating 100 years of the RSS journey continues over three days, providing a platform for discussions about the organization’s role and vision for India’s future.
