Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on August 27, 2025. The decision ends a remarkable 16-year chapter for Ashwin in the IPL, following his retirement from international cricket in December 2024. Ashwin shared the news through a post on social media platform X, stating, “They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.” He expressed gratitude toward all the franchisees, the IPL, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the experiences and relationships he gained during his career. Ashwin also conveyed his anticipation for the next phase of his cricket journey across different leagues worldwide.
The 38-year-old spinner retired from international cricket during India’s tour of Australia in late 2024. He leaves behind a decorated international career in which he became India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, claiming 537 wickets, just behind Anil Kumble’s 619. Ashwin’s IPL career began in 2009 with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where he debuted as a young spin talent. He played 221 IPL matches in total, capturing 187 wickets at an average of 30.22. With the bat, he scored 833 runs, including a highest score of 50. Ashwin was a key figure in Chennai Super Kings’ title-winning campaigns in 2010 and 2011. Over the years, he also represented several other franchises, including Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals. After a decade away, he returned to CSK in IPL 2025, signing for ₹9.75 crore, and played his last IPL match in the yellow jersey.
Ashwin’s legacy in the IPL includes being known as one of the brightest cricketing minds in the league, a strategic bowler, and a valuable team player. He plans to continue exploring opportunities and contributing to the sport in various other leagues around the world.
