Retiring Early in Portugal: One American’s Experience in the Top Destination for U.S. Expats
In 2011, Alex Trias left a six-figure career in law at age 41 to retire early. Although he prepared financially, he found the emotional adjustment challenging. Used to the routine and purpose that his job provided, Trias faced uncertainty about how to spend his time.
Fast forward 14 years, Trias and his wife now live in Portugal, the number one country where Americans want to move. Far from idle, his days fill with hiking coastal trails, enjoying local cuisine with friends, and building a new life. He says retiring early remains one of his best decisions but recalls the overwhelming start.
Embracing Uncertainty as a Chance to Grow
After the 2008 financial crisis, the law firm where Trias worked collapsed. Suddenly, his career path disappeared. Rather than cling to his old profession, he chose the unknown. Early retirement, he explains, means redefining identity without a clear roadmap. That mindset shifted Trias and his wife toward becoming explorers.
Moving to Portugal presented language barriers and the need to build new social circles. The initial disorientation became motivation to learn and grow. Trias encourages those delaying retirement because they fear uncertainty to consider it an opportunity for new experiences.
Financial Progress Without a Paycheck
At first, Trias and his wife expected to slowly draw down savings. Instead, their net worth kept growing. Moving abroad reduced expenses substantially compared to their former life in Washington, D.C. They save about $15,000 on state income taxes, $25,000 on health insurance, $14,000 on property taxes, and $20,000 on food and everyday costs each year—around $5,000 per month.
They maintain a financial strategy of living below their means and reinvesting excess funds. Their income now comes from investments rather than salaries. Trias highlights that retirement can mark the beginning of sustainable wealth growth.
Finding New Purpose Beyond a Career
Purpose remains important whether working or retired. When their daughter attended college, Trias and his wife faced open schedules again and wondered how to fill their time meaningfully.
They identified six priorities to structure their lives: nurturing friendships, personal health, couple time, travel, volunteering, and learning new skills. This plan helped create a fulfilling routine.
Currently, his wife volunteers at a tennis club, takes pottery and language classes, and stays active. Trias writes, coaches freelancers about retirement, and consults for a nonprofit. Together, they host dinners, experiment with recipes, and travel across Europe.
With the right mindset, the transition to early retirement can offer a fresh start filled with purpose and growth.
