Essential Guide to Registering Your Duke Supported International Travel for Safe Adventures Abroad

Duke University Urges Community to Register International Travel

Duke University’s Global Travel Team has issued a reminder about the need for students, faculty, and staff to register their international trips associated with the university. The registration must occur through the Duke Travel Registry, a requirement under Duke’s Global Travel Policy.

The policy applies whenever a trip involves Duke’s support. This support can take many forms: financial backing, logistical help, academic approval, mentorship, or credit granted for work done during the travel. For instance, if a person participates in research, club competitions, or unpaid internships abroad for academic credit, that travel counts as supported by Duke. In all such cases, travelers must enter their plans in the registry.

The purpose of the registry is to ensure access to safety resources and support. If an emergency arises during the trip, the Duke community can receive timely assistance. Registered travelers gain benefits such as pre-trip country information, advisories, and telephone support provided by International SOS. This organization also offers referrals for emergency evacuation by private air ambulance and an app to provide timely updates on local alerts.

Additional resources come from the Office of Global Health & Safety. This office helps faculty and staff who travel with students, offering academic travel support, personalized safety guidance, risk assessments, and assistance with participation agreements. The Global Travel Team itself offers help with visas and travel documents, along with a range of online resources. Their website includes information on Duke’s Travel Clinics, device security with the help of the Office of Information Technology, advice on accessing Duke’s network abroad, export control guidelines, and recommended travel partners. They also provide a general traveler’s checklist.

Anyone planning international travel with Duke involvement should register through the Global Travel Office to comply with university policy and secure access to all available support.

For questions or more information, travelers can consult the Global Travel Team and the Office of Global Health & Safety. Both offices aim to promote safe and well-prepared travel experiences for the Duke community.
