Essential Guide to Registering Your Duke-Supported International Travel: Stay Safe Abroad!

Duke University Reminds Community to Register International Travel

Duke University’s Global Travel Team has issued a reminder for all students, faculty, and staff to enter their international travel plans in the Duke Travel Registry. Registering is mandatory for any international travel supported by Duke. This registration helps keep the Duke community safe by providing access to important safety resources and emergency assistance while abroad.

Duke support includes many types of involvement in travel. This covers financial or logistical help, academic approval, mentorship, or awarding credit for work done during travel. Trips that qualify for registration include research activities, club competitions, or unpaid internships for credit outside the United States.

Several services are available to assist travelers. International SOS (ISOS) offers pre-trip information on countries, safety advisories, telephone advice during travel, and referrals for emergency evacuations. It also provides a mobile app to help travelers stay informed about alerts in the countries they visit.

The Office of Global Health & Safety supports faculty and staff traveling with students. It provides academic travel assistance, guidance on participation agreements for programs, personalized safety advice, and risk management evaluations.

The Global Travel Office assists with visas and travel documents for Duke-supported travelers. Its website features travel resources that cover topics such as travel clinics, device security support from the Office of Information Technology (OIT), export control rules, recommended travel partners, and a general traveler’s checklist. OIT also offers a traveler checklist that helps with securing devices and accessing Duke’s network abroad.

Travelers are encouraged to register their trips with the Global Travel Office to ensure they receive these safety benefits and support. Keeping Duke informed about travel plans strengthens the university’s ability to assist its community members in case of emergencies during international trips.
