West Virginia University Issues Reminder for International Travel Registration
West Virginia University (WVU) has issued a reminder for all faculty and staff who plan to travel internationally for University-related purposes. This requirement also applies to those who intend to take University-owned or personal equipment linked to University programs abroad, including access to University email during personal travel.
Travelers must register their trips with the University before departure. During registration, employees need to provide specific information to ensure compliance with U.S. Export Regulations. This collection of details forms part of the travel registration process. Completing this step before travel helps confirm adherence to Federal Export Control regulations and secures enrollment in International SOS travel health and evacuation insurance.
WVU recommends that travelers submit their registration at least six weeks before their trip. Faculty traveling with students must coordinate student travel through WVU’s Education Abroad program. Any faculty member who has not yet completed the Education Abroad process for accompanying students should contact Vanessa Yerkovich for assistance. All student travel with faculty, whether for credit or non-credit programs, requires official Education Abroad approval.
The University also reminds staff to register any visits by foreign visitors through the Office of Global Affairs’ International Visitor Registry before invitations are made or visits accepted. This registration allows the Export Control Office (ECO) to screen visitors against federal restricted party lists and check for any export control restrictions related to the visit. The ECO will contact the hosting faculty or staff member if further information or steps are necessary. They will also provide guidance on applicable export control requirements.
For questions about international travel registration or export control protocols, WVU advises contacting Tara George-Jones, International Risk Manager at the Office of Global Affairs, via email at Tara.George-Jones@mail.wvu.edu.
WVU remains committed to facilitating compliant and safe international travel for its faculty, staff, and students through clear procedures and support services.
