Mexico Breaks International Travel Record in 2025
Mexico reached a new high in international tourism in 2025, welcoming 98.2 million visitors. This number represented an increase of 13.6 percent compared to the previous year and stood as the highest annual total in the nation’s history, according to the Mexican Ministry of Tourism.
Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, shared that international tourists spent $34.992 billion in the country during 2025. This amount was 6.2 percent greater than the spending recorded in 2024. Nearly half of these visitors, or 47.8 million people, spent at least one night traveling in Mexico. This figure showed growth of 6.1 percent. The total did not include cruise passengers, who are counted separately from overnight visitors.
Rodríguez Zamora commented that the record number of visitors reflected a strong and resilient tourism sector in Mexico with a clear vision for the future. She expressed confidence in the ongoing positive trend for the industry and highlighted the steady rise of visitors throughout the year.
Visitors from Canada contributed notably to the 2025 tourism boost. Canadian arrivals to Mexico rose by 13 percent in the first half of the year. At the same time, Canadian travel to the United States dropped by about 25 percent due to tense international relations. The increase in Canadian tourism helped Mexico capture some of this shifted demand.
Mexico is preparing to build on its tourism success by hosting parts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Matches will take place in Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara. The participating teams in these cities include South Korea, Denmark, Ukraine, Colombia, Mexico, and Jamaica. The country aims to use this global event to attract more international visitors.
The record-breaking international travel figures for Mexico in 2025 highlight the country’s growing appeal as a destination. The government and tourism officials remain optimistic about continuing this momentum as Mexico strengthens its position in the global travel market.
