New York City saw a modest rise in visitors last year, despite fewer international travelers, according to a recent report from NYC Tourism + Conventions. The city welcomed 65 million visitors in 2025, marking a 0.7% increase compared to the previous year.
Domestic travelers contributed strongly to this growth. The number of domestic visitors reached 52.4 million, up 1.7%. The main source regions for these visitors included the New York City tristate area, Philadelphia, Washington, Los Angeles, and Boston. Overnight domestic trips, which make up just over half of all domestic visits, rose by 2.3%.
However, international visits declined by 3.2%, falling to 12.5 million travelers. Despite this overall drop, the city recorded increases in arrivals from the United Kingdom, Italy, and Mexico. NYC Tourism described these trends as influenced by “global challenges” but noted the decline was less severe than earlier estimates.
Visitors to New York City generated an estimated $84.7 billion in economic impact in 2025. This included $55.6 billion in direct spending and $7.5 billion in tax revenue collected at the local and state levels.
Hotel performance in New York City stood out compared to national figures. The city led among the top 25 domestic markets with an average occupancy rate of 84.2%. Luxury and upscale hotels drove this growth in occupancy, while midscale hotels experienced a 7% decline. The average daily rate for hotels in New York climbed 5% to $334. Looking ahead, NYC Tourism forecasts 66.3 million visitors in 2026. Domestic travel is expected to reach 53.4 million visitors, potentially surpassing the record set in 2019. International arrivals are predicted to recover to 12.9 million visitors, matching levels seen in 2024. The city also anticipates significant visitor interest related to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. NYC Tourism projects about 1.2 million visitors will come to the New York-New Jersey area for the event, which could generate $3.3 billion in economic activity.
These figures suggest New York City remains a strong travel destination, driven mainly by domestic visitors as international numbers adjust to global conditions. The upcoming sporting event will likely add further momentum to the city’s tourism sector.
