International Travel Grows 4% in 2025, Led by South America
International travel increased by 4% across the globe in 2025, according to recent data from IPK International’s World Travel Monitor. The rise brings worldwide travel closer to levels seen before the pandemic. Most trips were for holidays, with South America experiencing the strongest regional growth.
Regional Travel Trends
Outbound travel from Europe grew by 4%, matching the global rate. North America saw a slight 1% decline in outbound trips, yet the United States remained the top country for international travel. Germany and the United Kingdom followed as leading travel markets. Asia recorded a 5% increase in outbound travel. South America showed the greatest rise at 11%, mainly driven by more trips within the continent.
Top Destinations and Traveler Satisfaction
IPK International’s Destination Performance Index ranked destinations based on satisfaction, recommendations, and plans to return from holiday travelers. Dubai held the top global spot, followed by Abu Dhabi, the Bahamas, and Brazil. Dubai scored highest in service, accommodation, and weather but ranked lowest for sustainability along with Abu Dhabi. In Europe, Switzerland led ratings, just ahead of Austria. These countries earned praise for their landscapes and natural environments.
Travel Types and Spending Patterns
Holiday travel made up nearly three-quarters of all international trips in 2025, growing by 4%. Sun and beach holidays remained most popular, especially in Spain, which had the highest number of international visits. Trips focused on round-trips and nature grew faster than average. Event and wellness travel declined slightly. Business travel grew by 6%, returning to 2019 levels for the first time since the pandemic. Meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) travel rose by 8%.
The average length of international trips increased to about nine nights, influenced by more air travel and a rebound in long-haul journeys. Rail travel also expanded more than average. Spending per trip rose 5% compared to the previous year, with accommodation taking the largest share. Transport accounted for about 25% of expenses, while food and activities made up smaller portions.
Outlook and Industry Developments
Forecasts for 2026 indicate demand for international travel will remain steady, with growth rates returning to pre-pandemic norms. Travelers and destinations continue to focus on challenges related to overtourism and sustainability.
In response to trends in the Americas, ITB announced the launch of ITB Americas, a new business-to-business trade show set for November 10-12, 2026, in Guadalajara, Mexico. This event will cover North, Central, and South America as well as the Caribbean. The ITB Berlin Convention 2026, scheduled for March 3-5, will center on “Leading Tourism into Balance.” It will address growth, innovation, and sustainability in the travel industry through 17 thematic tracks and presentations by experts.
The latest data highlight a steady recovery in international travel, led by growth in holiday and business trips, especially in South America. Travel durations and spending rose, and the travel sector prepares for ongoing stability alongside a focus on sustainability and managing visitor numbers.
