Southern Europe and North America Set to Ignite Global Travel Trends in Summer 2026

Southern Europe and North America Show Strong Growth in Global Travel Demand for Summer 2026

New data analysis reveals that destinations in Southern Europe and North America are leading the global increase in international travel demand for the Northern Hemisphere summer season of 2026. According to the latest findings from The Data Appeal Company, part of the Almaviva Group, Southern Europe—especially Greece, Spain, and Italy—will see a notable rise in international travel intent between June and August 2026. Southern Europe Captures Increasing Share of Global Travel Interest

Southern Europe is projected to capture 11.71% of global international travel intent during the summer months, marking a rise of 2.47 percentage points compared to the same period in 2025. This growth highlights the region’s strong appeal as a travel destination, supported by effective air connectivity and the ongoing popularity of Mediterranean sun-and-sea holidays.

Among Southern European cities, Athens stands out with a substantial increase in travel interest, gaining 0.23 percentage points year-on-year to represent 0.77% of global travel intent. Athens’s role as both a cultural city and a gateway to the Greek islands contributes to its rising demand. Other well-performing cities include Barcelona, Rome, Madrid, and Milan, each showing steady year-over-year gains in travelers’ searches.

North America Maintains High Levels of Summer Travel Demand

North America also shows positive momentum with an 8.36% share of global travel intent for summer 2026, growing by 1.01 percentage points over the previous year. This surge rides partly on demand linked to FIFA host cities, with major urban centers such as New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Orlando seeing heightened interest. Canadian cities including Vancouver and Calgary are also posting notable growth, extending beyond sports-related travel to general tourism demand.

Asia Sees Mixed Performance Amid Political Challenges

Asia remains a substantial player in global travel, with Eastern Asia holding 14.41% and South-Eastern Asia 13.58% of summer travel intent. Together, they attract over a quarter of international travelers during the season. However, Eastern Asia’s share declines by 1.67 percentage points, while Western Asia faces a sharper drop of 2.69 points due to ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.

Despite this, South-Eastern Asia reports a slight increase in travel intent. Bali emerges as the leading destination in this region, advancing by 0.32 percentage points. Other cities showing growth include Manila, Jakarta, Hanoi, Da Nang, Phu Quoc, Ho Chi Minh City, Mactan-Cebu, and Koh Samui, reflecting overall regional diversity in travel interest.

Emerging Destinations in Latin America and Africa Gain Traction

The analysis identifies a redistribution of travel interest benefiting destinations in Africa and Latin America. Africa captures 4.28% of global travel intent, maintaining a stable position year-on-year. Latin America and the Caribbean increase their share to 3.38%, up by 0.72 points. Within Latin America, Peru, Brazil, and Mexico lead the growth, alongside emerging destinations like Puerto Rico, Aruba, and Guatemala across various travel segments.

Northern Europe Grows with Urban and Nature-Based Travel

Northern Europe attracts 5.96% of global summer travel interest, gaining 0.60 percentage points compared to 2025. The region’s appeal rests on options beyond traditional beach vacations, including urban exploration, cultural experiences, and nature-oriented travel. Cities such as London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Copenhagen, and regional destinations like Iceland all report rising travel intent, supporting the trend toward “coolcation” holidays during peak summer.

Underlying Factors

Carlos Cendra, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at Data Appeal, notes that disruptions in air connectivity, rerouted flights, increasing travel costs, and geopolitical issues have redirected long-haul travel demand toward destinations that travelers perceive as closer and easier to reach. This shift benefits Southern Europe and North America and helps sustain travel interest in parts of Asia despite challenges.

About the Data

The findings rely on the Share of Searches Index, a proprietary measure based on global flight search behavior. This index tracks changes in travel intent by comparing June through August 2026 data against the same period in 2025. It categorizes changes in travel demand as minor, moderate, or significant based on the size and impact of percentage point shifts.

These travel patterns offer insight into the evolving preferences and concerns of international travelers as summer 2026 approaches, providing valuable guidance for destinations, airlines, and the broader tourism industry.
