US-Iran Conflict Disrupts International Flights, Leaves Travellers Stranded
The recent outbreak of conflict between the United States and Iran has caused widespread disruption to international air travel, especially across the Middle East. Several key airports and airlines have suspended flights, leaving many travellers stuck and uncertain about their next steps.
Airspace Closures Affect Major Transit Hubs
Countries including Iran, Iraq, Israel, Syria, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates have closed parts or all of their airspace in response to escalating military strikes. This action has halted flights through the region’s busiest transit hubs that connect Australian travellers to Europe and Asia. For instance, Qatar Airways ceased all flights departing from Doha, Qatar’s capital, and Dubai Airports announced a full suspension of flight operations at Dubai International and Dubai World Central-Al Maktoum International airports.
Australian Airlines Respond to Disruptions
Virgin Australia confirmed that four of its flights operated by Qatar Airways, bound for Doha, turned back to Australia due to the closure of Qatari airspace. The airline also noted cancellations of multiple Qatar Airways flights and advised passengers scheduled to fly between Australia and Doha to monitor flight updates closely.
Global Flight Delays and Cancellations
Data from flight-tracking services shows over 18,800 flight delays and more than 2,400 cancellations worldwide as of mid-Sunday morning, Australian Eastern Daylight Time. Airspace over Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Israel, and Bahrain appeared nearly deserted, with flights rerouted around these areas for safety.
Damage and Casualties at Middle Eastern Airports
The conflict has also resulted in physical damage to vital airport infrastructure. Dubai’s international airport suffered minor damage in an Iranian missile strike, injuring four people. Abu Dhabi International Airport was hit by a drone intercept, causing the death of one person and injuring seven others due to falling debris.
Travellers Stranded, Facing Uncertainty
At Doha’s Hamad International Airport, thousands of passengers are stranded after flight cancellations. Penni Milton, an Australian traveller stuck there with her two children, described long lines and a lack of clear information about upcoming flights. Her plane had to circle near Kuwait before returning to Doha due to airspace closures. The absence of in-flight Wi-Fi meant passengers learned of the conflict only after landing.
Similar scenes played out in Sydney, where hundreds of passengers faced overnight cancellations. Nigel Howard, a traveller from Christchurch trying to reach the UK, experienced flight cancellation after boarding. Passengers had to obtain emergency visas and wait for hours at the airport. Many had nowhere to stay as hotels were fully booked, leading some to remain overnight at the airport.
Limited Airline Communication and Assistance
Several stranded travellers expressed frustration over the lack of communication and support from airlines. Some reported no assistance with accommodation, food, or reimbursement following cancellations. The disruption happened during major local events, such as Mardi Gras in Sydney, complicating efforts to find lodging.
Government and Airline Advisories
Australia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong described the situation as “extremely distressing” for Australians in the area. She urged people to reconsider or delay travel to the affected Middle Eastern countries and to exercise caution. Authorities and airlines continue to monitor the situation as the conflict unfolds.
Widespread Impact on International Aviation
The European Union’s aviation regulator has advised airlines to avoid the airspace affected by the conflict. Several international carriers have temporarily suspended flights to and from the Middle East. The volatile situation suggests ongoing challenges for international travel through the region in the near future.
