Jet Fuel Shortages Threaten Summer Travel Plans to Europe and Beyond
This summer may prove costly and uncertain for travelers, especially those aiming for European vacations. The ongoing war in Iran has pushed jet fuel prices sharply higher. Airlines around the world, particularly in Europe, face fuel shortages that could start as early as mid-May.
European carriers such as Lufthansa and KLM have announced flight reductions to conserve fuel. Lufthansa plans to cut close to 20,000 flights over the next six months. Other airlines might follow suit as fuel supplies tighten.
Rising operational costs are leading airlines to increase ticket prices and add fees. Passengers may face higher airfares, extra charges for checked baggage, and fuel surcharges. Some flights have been canceled altogether. These developments mean affordable summer holidays are becoming harder to find.
The impact extends to the United States, where airfare for both domestic and international flights has increased since the conflict began in late February. Data from the travel search engine Kayak shows the average international economy round-trip fare rose from $776 on February 23 to $1,064 by mid-April. Domestic fares climbed modestly from $335 to $358 during the same period.
Jet fuel costs have soared more than 70 percent since the war’s outbreak, according to the Platts Jet Fuel Price Index. Fuel expenses rank among the largest for airlines, forcing companies to confront billions in extra costs. In response, some carriers are seeking government aid. Spirit Airlines, already in bankruptcy, requested financial support.
Travel experts warn travelers to expect an uncertain season. Katy Nastro from Going.com noted that the current level of unpredictability resembles the early days of the Covid pandemic. She advised travelers to prepare for a challenging market when seeking affordable flights.
As airlines adjust to soaring fuel costs and supply shortages, travelers should monitor updates closely and consider flexible plans for summer trips to Europe and other destinations.
