Bangkok Leads as Most Visited City Amid Rising Tourist Challenges in Asia
Bangkok welcomed an estimated 30.3 million international visitors in 2025, according to Euromonitor International, making it the world’s most visited city this year. This influx highlights Asia Pacific’s growing role as a travel hotspot, with a 10% increase in international arrivals compared to last year. However, the surge in tourism brings challenges, especially due to poorly behaved tourists in the region’s popular destinations.
Tourism Boom and Behavior Concerns
The growth in visitor numbers has boosted local economies but also raised concerns about the impact of some tourists’ conduct on communities and cultural sites. A travel analyst interviewed by CNN described the situation as a “genie out of the bottle” scenario that is difficult to reverse. The issues range from disrespectful behavior to strain on infrastructure and public spaces.
Global City Rankings and Visitor Trends
In Euromonitor International’s Top 100 City Destinations Index for 2025, Paris once again ranks as the world’s most attractive city for tourists, holding the title for the fifth consecutive year. Other leading cities in the top 10 include Madrid, Tokyo, Rome, and Milan. Several Asian cities, including Tokyo, Singapore, and Seoul, appear in the rankings, reflecting the region’s appeal.
Europe’s museums plan to adjust policies to manage visitor volumes and quality. For example, the Louvre in Paris will increase entrance fees by 45% for non-European Economic Area tourists starting next year. Such measures aim to balance access with the preservation of cultural heritage.
Record-Breaking Developments in Travel and Hospitality
Alongside tourism trends, notable achievements are occurring within travel infrastructure and accommodation. Dubai opened the world’s tallest hotel in 2025, the 377-meter Ciel Dubai Marina, which stands on a very small land footprint. The hotel’s innovative design maximizes space by building vertically.
Hospitality awards highlight excellence in cities attracting many visitors. Rosewood Hong Kong was named the world’s best hotel for 2025 by the 50 Best hospitality brand. Two Bangkok hotels, Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Phraya River and Capella Bangkok, ranked in second and third places respectively, underscoring the city’s status as a luxury travel destination.
Major infrastructure projects also continue worldwide. Norway is constructing the Rogfast undersea rail tunnel, the longest and deepest of its kind at 17 miles, which will improve transport efficiency by replacing ferry service between cities. China is developing new record-breaking bridges to enhance connectivity.
Outlook for Asia’s Travel Destinations
The ongoing travel boom in Asia presents both opportunities and challenges. While cities like Bangkok attract millions and boost their global tourism profile, there is a need to address the consequences of overcrowding and travelers’ behavior to protect cultural and public assets. Sustained efforts will be required to encourage responsible tourism and balance growth with quality visitor experiences in the region.
