Rice University Offers Guidance on Risk Management and Insurance for International Travel
On February 12, Rice University held a Global Insights lunch-and-learn session titled “Know Before You Go: Risk Management and International Travel Insurance Coverage Explained.” The event aimed to help faculty and staff prepare for international travel with clear information and confidence.
Eno Oregbesan, director of the Office of Risk Management, presented the "4 Ps" of international travel risk management: proactivity, prevention, preparation, and planning for reaction. These four steps offer a practical way to foresee potential risks before traveling and to respond effectively if issues arise abroad.
During the session, Oregbesan guided attendees through important practices. These included registering all travel associated with Rice University, checking travel guidance that is specific to each destination, reviewing visa and vaccine requirements, and learning about local security conditions.
Juliana Crim, global travel safety manager at Rice Global, focused on Policy 852. She explained the need for pre-approval for student travel to locations considered elevated-risk and discussed the protocol for submitting group travel forms when traveling with students.
A major part of the discussion was Rice’s international insurance coverage. The session covered benefits such as medical care, evacuation services, and travel inconvenience coverage available to students, faculty, and staff traveling on Rice business. It also discussed accidental death and dismemberment insurance and foreign general liability protections. The presenters clarified common exclusions and coverage limits and described how travelers can get help through the Crisis24 service while overseas.
Oregbesan stressed that managing travel risk internationally is a shared responsibility. He urged travelers to report any incidents quickly and to use university resources both before and during travel. He emphasized that thorough preparation protects individuals and the university and supports Rice’s efforts in global engagement.
Rice Global will continue its Global Insights series on March 5, offering a session about the Rice Global Paris Center. Since opening in May 2022, the Paris Center has organized over 50 conferences, offered 22 summer courses, launched a new fall semester program, and built research ties with European institutions. The upcoming event will share updates on these achievements and future plans, inviting the Rice community to learn how they can get involved.
The March 5 session will take place from 12 to 1 p.m. in the Welcome Center Presentation Room at Sewall Hall. Interested individuals can register to attend.
