Trump Cuts Back International Travel After Turbulent Flight: Focus Shifts to Midterm Elections and Domestic Tours

Trump Cuts Back on International Travel After Air Force One Delays

President Donald Trump, 79, plans to reduce international trips to focus more on the upcoming midterm elections. This decision came after an electrical problem on Air Force One delayed his flight to Davos, Switzerland, causing a restless night for the president.

On Wednesday, reporters onboard the plane learned about the change in plans. The initial flight had to return to Washington, D.C., due to a malfunction, which shortened Trump’s sleep. After switching planes in the capital, he resumed the journey past midnight, adding about three extra hours to his travel time.

When Trump arrived in Zurich, Switzerland, he appeared tired and hoarse, with noticeable bags under his eyes. Despite the delay, he still addressed world leaders at the Davos conference.

Trump’s Chief of Staff, Susie Wiles, told the press that the president would now spend more time traveling inside the United States. His new schedule starts with a speech on the economy in Iowa on Tuesday, followed by visits to a different city each week. This strategy aims to improve Trump’s standing on economic issues, especially affordability, which many voters prioritize.

Last week, Trump began this domestic tour with a visit to Ford’s River Rouge plant in Michigan, where he spoke at the Detroit Economic Club. However, the visit became tense when Trump responded with a rude gesture to a heckler calling him a “pedophile protector.”

In a recent speech in Pennsylvania, Trump questioned the focus on affordability, calling it a “hoax” twice. His focus on this issue has caused frustration among some White House officials and Republican lawmakers, who want to prompt a stronger emphasis on economic and healthcare matters.

The White House has yet to comment on the updated travel plans. Trump’s shift from international events to domestic stops highlights an effort to engage voters ahead of the critical midterm elections this November.
