US Travel & Tourism Sector Faces Critical Turning Point Amid Global Competition
The United States remained the world’s largest Travel & Tourism market in 2025, but recent data from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) reveals signs of decline in its international market share. Despite a global sector GDP growth of 4.1%, North America posted the lowest growth rate at 1.0%, with the US rising only 0.9%.
International visitor numbers to the US dropped 5.5% compared to the previous year. Spending by these visitors also fell 4.6%, totaling $176 billion. Though domestic visitor spending remained strong at $1.54 trillion — a slight 0.3% increase year-on-year and 14.3% above pre-pandemic levels — the overall performance showed challenges in attracting travelers from abroad.
The sector supported 20.4 million jobs in the US in 2025, marking a 1.2% increase or around 242,000 new positions. This growth indicates positive momentum for employment in tourism-related fields despite the international visitor decline.
WTTC highlights that the US sits at a crucial crossroads. The country has significant potential to boost international visitor spending, support further job creation, and maintain its leadership role in global tourism. However, it needs to increase investment in promotion, rebuild international demand, and improve its global competitiveness.
Hosting major football events in 2026 offers the US a timely opportunity. These events are projected to attract approximately 1.24 million international visitors, providing a platform to showcase American destinations and convert attendees into longer-term advocates for travel to the country.
In contrast, fast-growing markets in Asia Pacific pose growing competition. China, the world’s second-largest travel market, grew its Travel & Tourism GDP by 9.9% in 2025 to $1.75 trillion. It supported 84.6 million jobs, a 2.0% increase, and saw substantial gains in both international visitor spending (up 10.5% to $135 billion) and domestic spending (up 10.7% to $890 billion).
The broader Asia-Pacific region led global industry growth with an 8.2% GDP increase in 2025, totaling $3.29 trillion. Key markets like Malaysia, the Philippines, India, and Indonesia all outperformed the global average growth rates.
Gloria Guevara, WTTC president and CEO, stated, “The US has a remarkable foundation in travel and tourism. To keep its lead, the country must invest in promoting its image abroad, especially around the upcoming football events. It must also foster a welcoming environment and create incentives to encourage more international visitors.”
Jason Wynn, CEO of Chase Travel, WTTC’s lead research partner, added, “US travel has shown resilience and remains a major employer and economic contributor. The series of global events scheduled through 2028 offers a unique moment to invite travelers worldwide and strengthen connections across communities.”
WTTC plans to continue collaborating with governments and industry leaders to promote sustainable growth and competitive positioning for Travel & Tourism. Chase Travel remains focused on making travel accessible and rewarding by connecting travelers and advisors with trusted services and experiences.
As the US works to revitalize its international tourism sector, success will depend on strategic promotion, improving traveler perceptions, and leveraging upcoming events to attract new visitors and encourage repeat travel.
