Greg Floyd, a familiar face on CBS6, has announced he will retire after 45 years in broadcast journalism. A native of the Capital Region, Floyd began his career in local news in 1979 when he interned at CBS6. His journey took him through various roles at other stations, including WENT radio in Gloversville, WTEN, FOX23 in Albany, and WRNN in the Hudson Valley. He eventually returned to CBS6 where he built a long-standing career.
Floyd, who will turn 67 in November, said he carefully considered staying on when CBS6 offered him a new contract. However, after reflecting on his career and life, he chose to step back from his work. He is recognized for his focus on government accountability reporting, especially his investigative series called “You Paid For It.” Over his career, Floyd won six New York Emmy Awards and five Edward R. Murrow Awards. One of these was the National Murrow Award in 2019 for his coverage of the Schoharie limo crash. He also received honors from the New York State Broadcasters Association and The Associated Press.
Floyd takes pride in mentoring many young reporters and anchors who have pursued journalism across the country. Although he has stayed private over the years, his family shares his commitment to broadcasting. His son, Billy Floyd, also works in television news, following in his father’s footsteps.
Stone Grissom, news director at CBS6, described Floyd’s retirement as bittersweet. He said the station celebrates Floyd’s accomplishments but will deeply feel his absence. Floyd plans to retire at the end of the year. He is the 14th local broadcast journalist to leave their role this year and the third longtime local television broadcaster to retire recently in the area. Other departures this year include Liz Bishop and meteorologist Steve Caporizzo.
Floyd’s career reflects decades of dedication to journalism and the Capital Region community. His work and mentorship have left a lasting impact on the local news landscape.
