The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) reports that the ongoing conflict in Iran has already caused losses of at least US$600 million per day in international visitor spending across the Middle East. This impact comes as air travel faces disruptions, traveler confidence declines, and regional connectivity weakens, leading to reduced demand in the travel industry.
The Middle East holds a key position in global travel, accounting for 5% of international arrivals worldwide and handling 14% of international transit traffic. Any disturbance in this region affects airports, flights, hotels, car rental services, and cruise lines around the world. Major aviation hubs like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Bahrain, usually serving about 526,000 passengers daily, have experienced closures and operational difficulties as tensions have risen, hurting both regional and global travel links.
WTTC’s findings are based on a pre-conflict forecast made in 2026, which expected the Middle East to generate around US$207 billion in international visitor spending that year. Interruptions in travel flow quickly translate into serious economic effects throughout the tourism industry.
Gloria Guevara, President and CEO of WTTC, stated, “Travel & Tourism is the most resilient of sectors. While the ongoing conflict has caused significant financial damage, history shows the sector can bounce back quickly. When governments provide support, such as helping hotels and managing repatriation efforts, recovery can begin in as little as two months.”
She added that cooperation between public and private sectors, clear communication, and measures to ensure safety are vital for rebuilding traveler trust and helping the travel sector regain footing. WTTC praises governments that have acted promptly to support recovery efforts in recent days.
The WTTC, representing private industry interests, is monitoring the situation closely. It remains in regular contact with governments and travel leaders to protect traveler safety and support the resilience of the global travel and tourism sector.
