Kakeru Announces Retirement from Competitive Street Fighter Play
Kakeru ‘Kakeru’ Watanabe, a prominent figure in Street Fighter esports and a member of ZETA Division, has declared his retirement from competitive gaming. The announcement came through Kakeru’s social media channels and follows a period of two months without competition.
The player cited a “neural dysfunction” as the reason behind his decision to step back from professional play. Kakeru explained that after discussions with his team, it became clear that continuing his competitive career would be difficult. He plans to leave ZETA Division by the end of the year to prioritize his health and recovery.
Kakeru began his journey in Street Fighter esports in 2021, quickly rising through the ranks at major tournaments. He won Capcom Cup 11 in March and secured second place at Evo 2025, marking him as one of Japan’s top Street Fighter players. Over his career, he earned approximately $1.4 million, highlighting his success in the scene.
Since Kakeru’s introduction to Street Fighter in 2024, ZETA Division has fielded nine players in various tournaments. The team currently holds fourth place in the Street Fighter League Pro-JP 2025 regular season, which includes 12 teams from across Japan. The league’s top three from each division will move on to playoffs, with the overall winner earning a spot at the SFL World Championship 2025 and a share of a ¥15 million prize pool.
Following Kakeru’s retirement, ZETA Division has added player ‘Yamaguchi’ to their Street Fighter League roster. Yamaguchi recently placed in the top 12 at Evo France 2025 and is considered a rising talent.
