The Centre has issued new guidelines to improve how retirement dues are handled for government employees. The Department of Pensions and Pensioners’ Welfare (DPPW) announced these rules on October 10, 2025. They aim to speed up the payments of pensions and related benefits to retirees in the Union government.
One key part of the new process is appointing a welfare officer, also called a pension mitra, for each employee who is about to retire. This officer will help the employee complete all necessary paperwork. They will also assist family members if the pensioner passes away, helping them submit claims to receive family pensions.
The guidelines want to make coordination between ministries stronger to avoid delays. They set clear rules on checking for any vigilance issues before retirement. However, pension payments cannot be delayed due to these checks. Ministries must finish these clearances three months before an employee’s retirement since the clearance lasts only three months.
The government’s goal is to issue pension payment orders (PPOs) or electronic PPOs 60 days before retirement. It wants to make payments of retirement benefits by the day after retirement and pay the first pension by the end of the next month. The guidelines cover all Central Civil Services employees.
With these steps, the government expects to help retiring employees receive their dues on time. The new rules aim to reduce the current delays in pension payments and documentation. They provide a clear path for retirees and their families to claim their benefits smoothly.
