Wall Street Soars: Dow Jumps 900 Points as S&P 500 Hits Record High Amid Robust Earnings and Falling Oil Prices

Dow Jones Industrials Soar 900 Points as S&P 500 Crosses 7,700 Amid Strong Market Rally

On August 4, 2026, U.S. stock markets showed remarkable strength, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising by 907.47 points, or 1.71%, to close at 54,085.88. The S&P 500 also climbed 1.79%, reaching a new record closing high of 7,736.52. The Nasdaq Composite gained 2.59%, finishing at 26,584.99. The surge followed positive earnings reports and a further drop in oil prices after news emerged that talks to reopen the Strait of Hormuz were underway. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that discussions with Iran might lead to a deal within a day or two. This development helped ease concerns about global oil supply, with West Texas Intermediate crude futures falling 5.69% to $75.77 per barrel. Brent crude also dropped 5.26%, settling at $79.36 per barrel.

Tech Stocks Lead the Rally

Technology shares led market gains, rising about 4%. Palantir Technologies stood out with a 29% jump after reporting impressive second-quarter results. CEO Alex Karp described this quarter’s performance as “otherworldly,” attributing it to rising demand for AI-related services. Chip stocks also made strong gains: Micron Technology rose over 7% and Marvell Technology added nearly 13%, continuing their recovery after a challenging July.

Industrial stocks showed strength as well. Caterpillar rose more than 5%, setting a new intraday record. The company reported solid second-quarter earnings and raised its revenue growth forecast. Caterpillar highlighted robust demand connected to the expansion of AI data centers and expects tariffs costs to remain at the lower end of prior estimates.

Financial stocks rose 0.9%, with Goldman Sachs up more than 2%. Materials and industrial sectors gained nearly 2% each.

Earnings Season Impresses

More than 84% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported earnings this season exceeded expectations, according to FactSet data. Thierry Wizman, a global foreign exchange and rates strategist at Macquarie Group, noted that corporate results so far have supported the recent strong market trend, even for semiconductor firms that had faced uncertainty.

Amazon’s Market Cap Surpasses $3 Trillion, Dips Following Bezos Share Sale

Amazon carved out history by briefly topping a $3 trillion market capitalization on Monday. However, its stock dropped about 2% on Tuesday after founder Jeff Bezos filed to sell approximately 15 million shares valued at $4.1 billion under a planned trading program. Amazon’s second-quarter earnings fueled confidence, with growth in its cloud computing business and AI investments helping to drive demand.

SpaceX Retail Interest Persists Despite Stock Decline

SpaceX’s publicly traded shares have fallen 17% since their June debut and nearly 50% below their mid-June peak. Still, retail investors have continued to buy every trading day, according to VandaTrack data. The stock’s average individual investor inflows have declined, but buying increased on Tuesday, ahead of SpaceX’s first earnings report.

Chipotle Shares Drop Over Possible Salmonella Link

Chipotle Mexican Grill shares slid about 8% after the company temporarily removed jalapeño peppers from Minnesota restaurants. The decision came amid an investigation into a salmonella outbreak linked to jalapeños. Chipotle said it is cooperating fully with public health authorities and has replaced the suspect ingredient with supplies from other growers.

Market Breadth Remains Healthy Amid Moderate Volume

The rally on Tuesday involved broad participation. Nearly 80% of shares traded on Nasdaq and 70% on the New York Stock Exchange advanced. On Nasdaq, advancing stocks outnumbered declining issues by nearly three to one. However, total trading volumes were below recent averages, with Nasdaq’s volume at 85% of its 30-day average by mid-afternoon.

Overall, Tuesday’s trading reinforced a solid start to August and reflected investor optimism backed by strong earnings and easing geopolitical concerns.
